Hi. I’m Abbey.
I’m a mother of two lower elementary aged kids and a former classroom teacher. My teaching journey started in 2008. During this time the iPhone just hit the market, the app store was created, and the web browser Google Chrome was released. My teaching career wrapped up in 2020 after twelve years in the classroom. At this time, the COVID-19 pandemic was just beginning and every aspect of our lives was wrapped around technology.
It’s clear that as my time in the classroom increased so did technology usage. As this increased, it seemed as if students began to lag behind in some critical skills. It quite simply seemed like no coincidence.
Sandwiched in between my time in the classroom, I had two children of my own. It was during this time that I began to see that many of the learning, emotional, and social shortcomings could be traced back to skills generally taught at a young age through play and hands-on experiences. As a result, I have tried to promote a low-tech, high-play environment in my house. The results I’ve witnessed have astounded me and have led me to create this online space.
My aim with this website is to promote play opportunities for your children that are fun, easy to create, and are purposeful in teaching some basic skills that will play an important part in your child’s learning journey.
